- Approved a professional development partnership with Texas A&M University STEM Project for Waco High, University High and A.J. Moore Academy during the 2008-2009 school year. The total cost of the project is $94,494, funded through School Improvement program grant funds and Title II, Part A funds.
- Accepted gifts to Waco ISD:
- Waco ISD's "Celebration of Community" received $2,000 from Hillcrest Health Systems, $2,000 from Carter Bloodcare, and $2,000 from Texas State Technical College Waco. Other businesses have contributed a combined total of $21,000.
- Sul Ross Elementary and Brook Avenue Elementary each received $3,000 from Keep McLennan County Beautiful to establish a green classroom and outdoor learning center at their respective campuses.
- Approved sign-on incentives of $2,000 per teacher for Doris Miller Elementary for the 2008-2009 year.
- Postponed a board member's request for travel expenses.
Monthly Financial Report: As of April 30, 2008, the financial report showed $76,022,381 in revenue and $77,587,643 in expenditures with expenditures exceeding revenue by $1,565,262.
Development Report: Kay Metz, director of development and community partnerships, reported on the following gifts and grants to the district:
- Waco ISD's six outstanding teachers each received $1,000 from the Waco Foundation.
- Waco ISD's "Outstanding Educator Awards" received $1,000 from Central National Bank, $1,000 from Insurors of Texas and $1,000 from Richard Karr Motors.
- Advanced Academics received the meal and service valued at $8,827 from Child Nutrition Services-Sodexo for the 2008 Academic Achievers Banquet.
- Waco ISD campuses received grants totaling $118,000 from the Waco ISD Education Foundation. Additionally, two Waco High students, Cameron Byrd and Sameer Hashmi, each received a $10,000 Dorothy Crippen Hurd scholarship from the Waco ISD Education Foundation. Mrs. Metz presented a copy of the Foundation's 2007 audit to the Trustees.
Superintendent's Report: Dr. Roland Hernandez, superintendent of schools, made the following announcements:
- Congratulations to the University High Step Team, Principal Nolan Correa and the faculty and staff at University High. The Step Team just won first place at state competition.
- Congratulations to the University High Mariachi Band. They finished third in the state competition.
- The Elementary University Interscholastic League awards ceremony will be held in the gymnasium of Lake Air Middle on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at noon.
- The Waco High Choir will have its annual show, "The Big Show," on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. Please arrive early for seating.
- The district's annual "Celebration of Community" will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 6 p.m. at the Convention Center.
- The Secondary University Interscholastic League awards ceremony will be held in the Performing Arts Center at Waco High on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at noon.
- Graduation ceremonies will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Heart of Texas Coliseum. A.J. Moore Academy graduation is at 10 a.m.; University High graduation is at 1:30 p.m. and Waco High graduation is at 5 p.m.
- University Middle will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school on Sunday, May 25, 2008 from 2 until 4 p.m. with a come-and-go reception at the campus.
- Dr. Hernandez thanked all the individuals who helped pass the bond package.

Strategic Planning Report: Dr. Don Hooper, a strategic planner and consultant for the district, presented a report on strategic planning. Dr. Hooper explained the entire planning process involved in creating a long-term strategic plan for the district.

Pledge of Allegiance
Parkdale Elementary students Kimla Merritt, fifth-grade, and Kara Merritt, fourth-grade, led the pledge of allegiance. Marsha Henry is the principal.
"Why I Love My School" Awards
Kay Metz, director of development and community partnerships, introduced Michael Vivio, publisher of the Waco Tribune-Herald. Mr. Vivio thanked the district for participation in the "Why I Love My School" campaign. Seven Waco ISD elementary schools competed in the online competition. Each school utilized students to develop a promotional video about their campus. The videos were used in an online contest on the Waco Tribune-Herald website. The contest drew 86,000 page views and 27,604 votes were registered during the two week time period. The Waco Tribune-Herald donated $1,000 in prizes to the top three winning schools. Parkdale Elementary received $500 for first place. They received 10,483 votes. Kendrick Elementary received $300 for second place. Dean Highland received $200 for third place. Mr. Vivio thanked the Board of Trustees for their support.
Recognition of PAC
Dr. Roland Hernandez, superintendent of schools, recognized members of the political action committee, Friends of Waco's Schools. The committee helped Waco pass the $172.5 million bond package for the district. Dr. Hernandez introduced Ralph Cooper (chairman), Phyllis Flowers, Ernesto Fraga, and Todd Moore (treasurer). Dr. Hernandez thanked the entire committee for their efforts in getting the bond election passed.
Waco High School Soccer Teams
Johanna Denson, athletic director, introduced both the girls and boys soccer coaches at Waco High. Both teams made the district playoffs this year.

Johanna Denson, recognized Waco High 11th-grader Corbett Curry for becoming a regional qualifier in boys golf. Keith Mikeska is the golf coach at Waco High.

Brian Jenkins, Waco High Tennis coach, introduced Waco High 11th-grader Marsha Palasota, who qualified for regionals in tennis. She is the first student in 18 years at Waco High to qualify.

Belinda Denman, girls track coach at University High, introduced the University High regional qualifier in track, 11th-grader Latoria Satchell. Latoria qualified by placing third in the 200 meter dash. Latoria is also sixth in her class at University High. Troy Tinney, fine arts director, presented the results from the recent UIL music contest and the district's music contest. There were 28 "superior" group awards, 15 "excellent" group awards, 11 "good" group awards and four "fair" group awards made at the UIL contest to Waco ISD bands, orchestras and choirs. Kay Metz, director of development and community partnerships,
introduced Sheri Street, executive director of Keep Waco Beautiful. Ms. Street recognized University Middle as the "Campus of the Month" in appreciation of their environmental and beautification efforts. Principal Raul Moreno accepted the award.
State History and Science Fair
Karen McDonald, content specialist-social studies, presented the overall history fair results. This year, 589 students participated in the Heart of Texas Regional History Fair; 67 students won at the regional competition; 28 students advanced to the state competition in Austin; and one student, Calley Powell, has advanced to the national competition. Mrs. McDonald congratulated the students and teachers for their work, and recognized two teachers for earning individual awards. Karen Brown, social studies teacher at Waco High, won the senior division "Teacher of the Year" at the Heart of Texas Regional History Fair. Dr. Sherry Mullins, social studies teacher at Tennyson Middle, won the junior division "Teacher of the Year at the Heart of Texas Regional History Fair. Mrs. McDonald also noted that 13 students advanced to the state science fair.
Waco High
Dr. H.T. Sanchez, principal of Waco High, congratulated the students and teachers for their efforts at the history fair. It was the first time for Waco High to send students to the regional competition in history fair. The teachers are Karen Brown, Richard Price and Courtney Copas.
