Longtime assistant becomes head man in Lion Country
Waco ISD is pleased to announce that Marty Herbst has been named head football coach of the Waco High School Lions.
Herbst began his coaching career in Bay City ISD in 1988. In 1992, Coach Herbst accepted an offer to join Johnny Tusa's staff at Waco High School and eventually became the Lions' Defensive Coordinator. In 2006, Coach Herbst helped Tusa and the Lions reach the Class 4-A, Division 2 State Championship at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Coach Herbst accepted the opportunity to become the Lions' Interim Head Coach in May of last year. Under his leadership, the Lions completed the 2012 football season with 9-4 record overall and 5-2 in District play. The Lions advanced to the Regional Finals of the State playoffs.
Coach Herbst and his wife Cindy have two daughters: Lyssa, a teacher at Waco High School and Lynn, a junior at Baylor University.
