Waco Independent School District and 14 of its campuses received a “Met Standard” rating on the state’s accountability system. The ratings system and scores were released on Thursday, August 8.

All Texas public school districts and individual campuses received one of two ratings, “Met Standard” or “Improvement Required,” based on four index scores. The indices include student achievement on standardized tests (STAAR and TAKS), student progress expectations, closing performance gaps among economically disadvantaged students and other low performing groups, and postsecondary readiness indicators. To earn a “Met Standard” rating, a school must meet target scores in all indices that apply.
The fourteen Waco ISD campuses that earned the “Met Standard” rating includes Waco High, which had been tagged with an “Academically Unacceptable” rating four consecutive years under the previous accountability system.
“While I am beside myself with joy that the district and University High made the grade, I am especially ecstatic about Waco High,” said Superintendent Bonny Cain.
High index scores at six Waco ISD elementary campuses earned them one or more Academic Achievement designations from the state including Dean Highland (math), Hillcrest PDS (math, reading and progress), Kendrick (math and progress), Lake Air Montessori (reading and progress), Mountainview (math, reading and progress) and Parkdale (reading).
Nine Waco ISD schools have been rated “Improvement Required” as a result of not meeting all index targets. Of those, only three fell short in student achievement while two did not meet student progress expectations. The biggest challenge facing Waco ISD is closing the performance gaps among economically disadvantaged, African-American and Hispanic students at eight campuses.
“Meeting the student achievement target score at all but three of our campuses is huge for us,” said Chris Everett, executive director of curriculum and instruction. “It tells us that the changes we’ve made in instruction based on best practices are working.”
“Waco ISD is like a big ship whose rudder has now turned,” added Cain. We’re heading in the right direction, we know our strengths and weaknesses, and we are optimistic that next year’s performance will be even better!”
