The University High School soccer teams and JROTC battalion have once again joined forces for the fourth annual “Make a Wish Come True” Christmas gift program. The program focuses on the families of students who attend University High or its feeder schools including South Waco Elementary, Alta Vista Elementary, Bell's Hill Elementary, Kendrick Elementary and Cesar Chavez Middle.
The participating schools require their students to write a short essay explaining what they want for Christmas and why. The essays are then read by school representatives and twenty students from each school have their wish fulfilled.
Many of the children request jackets and blankets because of the cold weather. Some ask for school supplies while others request things for their siblings or parents. Even more surprising, very seldom does a child ask for toys.
“I don't want anything for me for Christmas," writes one child. "All I want for Christmas is for my little brother and sister to have a blanket and jacket. It is so cold at night and we do not have heat. A blanket will keep my little brother and sister warm at night. Also, they both need a warm jacket to wear to school."
