Provident Heights Elementary is already seeing increases in Renaissance Star Reading scores thanks in part to a grant from the Waco ISD Education Foundation. First grade teacher Meghan Schwalm wrote a proposal to the Foundation in the amount of $2,999.54 in order to cover the cost of new books, rolling carts and plastic containers. Her plan was simple, but effective.
“We are in a two-story building and my first graders take a bit longer to go up and down the stairs to the library," explained Schwalm. "I thought about how I could reduce our traveling time and spend more time in the classroom. My solution was to bring books to the kids. I just needed money. That’s where the Foundation came in.”
Now, young readers at Provident Heights have carts of books delivered their classrooms.
“The kids are excited to have so many books to choose from," said Principal Debbie Sims. "Their excitement is contagious and our reading scores are showing it.”
