Waco ISD actively participates in the National History Day competition at the regional, state, and national levels. Students within the middle schools of Waco ISD are exposed to this competition and its various events -- documentary, paper, website, exhibit, and performance (both group and individual) -- through their history classes. Throughout the last five years, Waco ISD has developed a history of excellence and success in this competition.
This competition requires students to thoroughly research a topic that aligns with the national theme by examining primary source and secondary source materials, developing an annotated bibliography of sources consulted, and developing the final project/paper for competition and evaluation. This activity requires inquiry, research, and writing skills in all events. Additionally, skills in speaking, art, and technology enhance the products that students submit for the various competitions.
In 2015, six WISD students placed at the national finals in Washington, D.C. in four different events.
The 2016 National History Day competition theme is Exploration Encounter Exchange in History, an explanation of which can be found here. NHD has also released some sample topics for this theme.
