Montelongo received the 2015 Dr. Hector P. Garcia Spirit of Achievement Award named in honor of the man who founded the GI Forum in 1948.

Montelongo, who completed his distinguished 23-year military career as First Sergeant in 2002, started the University High Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) battalion that same year. He has taught hundreds of Trojan Cadets ever since.

The Army JROTC program is noted for helping students learn character education and leadership skills that are instrumental in improving academic achievement. Its goal is to help high schools throughout the country produce successful students and citizens while fostering a constructive and disciplined learning environment.

The University battalion is noted for its community service. During the 2014-2015 school year, the Trojan Cadets performed 5,500 hours of community and school service.
