Using a box of raw materials, student teams at each competing school have been given six weeks to design and build a remote-controlled machine that will perform a specific task. On competition day, the teams and their machines will take part in a head-to-head sports-like competition to see which is BEST.

Heart of Texas BEST Robotics contests began in 2010 and have served more than 1,500 middle and high school students in the six county Heart of Texas Region. Seeking to motivate students towards science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers, H.O.T. BEST Robotics is hosted and supported by Texas State Technical College-Waco.

Schools compete in five major scoring areas in an effort to win the BEST Overall Award which is scored not only by robot performance, but also by a marketing presentation, engineering design notebook, team exhibit, team interview and team spirit. Top finishers in the Waco meet will advance to the Texas BEST Regional Championship to take on the top teams from Texas and New Mexico.
