Chef Debra Ortiz, in collaboration with Culinary Arts Teacher Sara Shiels, introduced University High School student Rebekah Vega as the celebrity "Student Chef of the Month" at this month's Board of Trustees meeting. Rebekah helped prepare dinner for the Board featuring fried catfish, coleslaw, french fries, okra, hush puppies and peach cobbler.
Rebekah is enrolled in the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at University High and plans to attend the Art Institute of San Diego after graduating next June.
First exposed to cooking by her parents, Rebekah has helped cater golf tournaments, A.J. Moore Advisory Board breakfasts and dinners, and several WISD Education Foundation events.
Rebekah's goals include opening a wedding cake bakery and eventually franchising bakeries across the country.
