We have been awarded a $500 grant from the Laredo Taco Company® so that we can grow fresh vegetables and herbs in the gardens at our campus. Students will participate in preparing the soil, planting, maintaining plants and using what we grow. All grade levels (over 400 students) will have the opportunity to work in the garden and the entire school will be able to watch the plants grow, discuss the work that goes into a successful garden and enjoy the garden’s beauty. Specific grade levels will be responsible for different areas of the garden (growing different items) and some grade levels are building a compost. At Stripes they make salsas daily using fresh vegetables in their Laredo Taco Company® kitchens and state that their secret ingredients are always fresh ingredients! To share this handmade salsa recipe with the bright minds of tomorrow, Stripes Stores has launched the Stripes Fresh Learning Garden seeded by Laredo Taco Company.
The Stripes Fresh Learning Garden will give our students a hands-on experience to understand where food comes from and learn the value of using fresh foods. At Laredo Taco Company a tomato today is tomorrow’s salsa. Thanks to Tammy Johnston, one of our first grade teachers that applied for the grant. Our school received the Stripes® Fresh Learning Garden Seeded by Laredo Taco Company® grant which will help our school plant the seeds that will be the ingredients for tomorrow’s pico de gallo. We received seed packets to help launch our garden along with a check for $500 and Stripes hosted a “Laredo Taco Company Appreciation Breakfast Party” for all of our staff! We are excited to grow our minds and our gardens as we improve our learning environment and our environment as a whole.
