Visitors from the Land Down Under
A school administrator and teacher from Australia are visiting Waco ISD classrooms this week to learn more about the Baylor University Professional Development School partnership. Before the end of their weeklong stay in Waco, Deputy Principal Pam Dunbar and classroom teacher Debbie Heenan from Camp Hill Primary and Infant School in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia will visit Parkdale Elementary, Mountainview Elementary, Hillcrest PDS and Bell's Hill Elementary. They are specifically visiting classrooms where Baylor education majors are currently serving as interns. Next year, these same interns will spend three weeks student teaching in Australia schools.
"Since 1992, our partnership with Camp Hill has enabled future teachers to get a glimpse of how childhood education is done halfway around the globe," said Dr. Betty Ruth Baker, director of the Teaching in Australia Intern Program. "It really opens their eyes."
Sydney Key, an intern in Janis Clay's second-grade classroom at Parkdale Elementary, is excited to be in the program.
"I am looking forward to experiencing schools in Australia," said Key. "It will be interesting to see if the challenges there are similar to those in Waco and throughout Texas. The time I spend at Camp Hill will no doubt help me become a better teacher."
