A stingy defense and a big play offense led Waco High School to a 28-12 win over previously unbeaten Harker Heights Thursday night at Waco ISD stadium.

The Lions held the Knights to only 80 yards rushing and intercepted two passes as Marty Herbst’s team started with three straight wins for the first time in nine years.

Terrance Hamilton rushed for 111 yards on 20 carries, his third straight game with more than a hundred yards on the ground.  Hamilton, Jaylen Harris and Quinn Williams all reached the end zone, and the defense added a score returning an interception for a touchdown in the second half.

WISD-TV’s Lark Smith says the last Waco High team to start 3-0 was in 2007 when the Lions beat Wylie, Ennis and Corsicana before losing to Euless Trinity.  The Lions haven’t started 4-0 since they won their first 11 games in 2002 before falling the second round of the playoffs to Klein Forest.

Waco HS hosts cross-town rival Midway next Friday night in the first ever Bush’s Chicken night at Waco ISD stadium. The two teams will battle in a Buffalo Bites eating contest earlier in the week, and everyone who attends the game Friday will get a coupon from Bush’s for a free iced tea.
