WACO, Texas – Waco ISD Trustees Thursday night unanimously approved the hiring of former University High School teacher and coach Dr. Ricky Edison to return to that campus as principal next year.
Edison has been the Superintendent in Abbott ISD for the last six years, marking 20 years as an educator at Central Texas campuses.
“I am so excited about this new chapter in my career, and thrilled to have the opportunity to help make University the best high school it can be,” Edison said.
He began his career teaching Government and coaching at UHS before becoming an assistant principal at Bell’s Hill Elementary in Waco ISD.
A three-year stint as Principal at South Waco Elementary followed, then Dr. Edison moved to Abbott to lead that school district.
Edison earned his Bachelor’s degree in Education from Baylor in 1996, a Master’s degree from Tarleton State in 2004, and then a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from that same school in 2013.
He will replace Bill Shepard, who has been the Principal at UHS on an interim basis this year.
Dr. Edison and his wife, Cari, and their two children, Mase and Murphee, received a standing ovation from UHS supporters after the announcement at the Board of Trustees meeting.
