Waco ISD athletes will be able to take advantage of another state-of-the-art facility with the grand opening of a new artificial turf softball field Monday, January 30, at the District sports complex.
Softball coaches Amanda Rose (WHS) and Karen Ramirez (UHS), some of their players, and District officials will be at the 3:30 p.m. ceremony on the field adjacent to the Waco ISD football Stadium.
Crews from Hellas Construction in Austin installed the new turf over a six-week period, starting with a new drainage system, then a stone foundation and a cushion pad. The final step was the all-weather Matrix Baseball Synthetic Turf that will allow local teams to play a consistent schedule. The playing surface is green where grass would be on a standard field, and there is tan turf in many of the areas where there would normally be dirt.
“Bringing the artificial turf in allows us a year round practice surface for our athletes,” said Waco ISD Athletics Director Johnny Tusa. “It will also help our teams, as well as other schools from outside the area, have a place to play post-season games and tournaments and stick to their schedule. On this field, when it rains, it drains,” he explained.
The Waco ISD Sports Complex is already a top post-season destination in football with an outstanding artificial turf field and stadium. Only one of the softball fields had the new turf installed.
Waco ISD’s softball fields have hosted 555 regular season and playoff games the last seven years. We believe Whitney and Cameron are the only other Central Texas school districts with artificial turf fields for softball.
