Waco High School's Mock Trial Team won the regional title in the UIL Mock Trial Competition Thursday evening in McLennan County's 54th District Courtroom.
That group, which has only two seniors on its 10-member team, now advances to the State Competition in Dallas, March 2-4.
The Lions defeated Midway, Waco Home Schoolers and Live Oak in consecutive "trials" to take the Region 12 title. Coach Rick Lowe credited the student's hard work for their success in what looked to be a "rebuilding" year when the mock trial season began in October.
The team has also benefitted from consultation with former Baylor University President Ken Starr, as well as an Assistant Prosecutor in McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna's office.
Waco High has a tradition of making it to the State Competition at least a dozen times, according to Lowe, but this is their first time to qualify for that final step
in three years.
