For the first time in its 179-year existence, members of the Philosophical Society of Texas are meeting in Waco and Waco High School's Acapella Choir greeted them at Jim and Nell Hawkin's Hawkesdene residence for a Friday afternoon luncheon. Ken and Alice Starr helped organize the weekend conference that included tours of notable sites in Waco like Baylor's McLane Stadium and the Mammoth Park National Monument.
The acclaimed WHS Choir, directed by Carrie Forehand, presented a handful of songs from the grand staircase just inside the Hawkin's mansion.
Membership in the Philosophical Society of Texas is by invitation only and limited to 200 persons of distinction whose life and character have furthered the purposes for which the Society was established, according to the group's website. Starr is the President of the Board of Directors of that group for 2016-17.
